The Vicar of Baghdad appeals on behalf of Iraqi Association
Canon Andrew White, the Vicar of Baghdad, the only Anglican church in Iraq appeals on behalf of Iraqi
Association this Sunday, 8th March on BBC Radio 4, to raise money in aid of Iraqi children.
Canon Andrew White is describing a nine-year-old Nawal. She is one of the thousands
of orphaned children, left to fend for themselves in the streets of Baghdad, after their parents were either killed or just disappeared.
Nawal lives with two other families in an abandoned building near hay Al-Jamela district in
Baghdad. She misses her parents. She struggles to survive, by begging in the streets of Baghdad – the families she lives with are very poor.
This is not uncommon during the last six years in Iraq. The daily hardships - bomb blasts, gunfire, killings of
family members and sectarian violence - are taking an increasing toll on the lives of Iraq's children. This is
happening in a country where almost half of the inhabitants are younger than 18. Most of the children in Iraq
have lived all their lives under the economic sanctions and wars, which has affected health and nutrition during
the important years of their growth and formation.
“It is nearly impossible to quantify exactly how much the violence has impacted these children or just how many are affected, I
call them the silent victims.” Said Jabbar Hasan of Iraqi Association in Hammersmith and Fulham, west London.
Although the security situation has improved but children saw little respite from this, keeping childhood in
Iraq is more precious than ever. This appeal will help us, through our networks in Baghdad, to provide children
with food they need, as well as medical care to keep them healthy and resilient. And it can provide too the
education needs, and it will also help us to organise children’s activities to ease the sectarian
division. You can donate now using our secure website
